Motorola Moto E sports water-resistant splash guard, so out of curiosity, I did some water tests and the outcome is totally dissapointing! Though, the company doesn't claim this phone to be water proof or water resistant, Moto E couldn't survive water splash as well.

The back cover isn't properly sealed and the microUSB port is also not covered, so never try to immerse your Moto E into water or over try to use it under heavy rain. The display has got oleophobic coating, thats why it repels water, but that doesn't mean the phone can survive water damage.
