Nowadays the smartphone is a pretty important cycling accessory. Carrying one on a ride, though has usually meant sticking it away out of sight it in a jersey pocket. With so many cycling apps now available this is probably not the best place for it, especially if you are using it as a cycling computer or as an on the bike sat nav.
Enter the Manta waterproof smartphone case and bike mount from a UK based company called Craft Cadence who, according to their website, specialise in artisanal, micro scale crafted cycle accessories. As you can see from their website, they have several other smartphone cases and even a saddlebag.
Now when I hear the word ‘artisinal’ I usually think of beer and bread but I think now, for most people, it probably conjures up images of beards, tattoos and man buns.
Just so we are clear, Craft cadence are not paying me to make this film but they did send me a free product for the purpose of this review.
In the Manta’s box you will find the case, the handlebar mount and the mount adaptor.
The case is made from carbon fibre PU leather materials and has a large, clear plastic window which allows good visibility of the phone’s screen. It has two sealing methods: a velcro flap and what I am going to call a waterproof seal. To inset your phone, undo the velcro flap and the waterproof seal, slide it in and re-close, paying particular attention to the waterproof one. The case has a fairly chunky back which, conveniently, ensures that the phone’s screen is always tightly pressed against the large plastic window.
As most smartphones are touch screen thesedays, the window also allows you to have hands on control. The Manta also has another, smaller clear plastic window on the back right about where the phone’s camera lens should be so you don’t need to remove it from the case if you want to take a photo or shoot some video.
And if you get a call, the case doens’t affect sound quality too much.
Craft Cadence claim that the Manta has the most compact and secure mounting system on the market. Attaching it is tool free and couldn’t be simpler. Just feed the tongue through the mount adaptor, insert it in the buckle and then tighten up the ratchet. It can be placed anywhere in the cockpit area, either on the handlebar or the stem as the case will then slide on to the adaptor either vertically or horizontally.
Once in place, the Manta is locked in to position and is only released when you push down on the little tab on the adaptor.
Craft Cadence also claim that the Manta is 100% waterproof, certified to IPX6 standards so lets just put that to the test by simulating typical weather conditions which you are likely to encounter on a ride during a normal British Summer.
Not bad. As you can see, the phone is completely dry and undamaged. Apparently, IPX6 standard means you could completely submerge the Manta up to one metre underwater for 30 minutes if you so wished so it could even be used for water sports.
My main grumble is that the Manta is not the most stylish thing to stick in your bike’s cockpit. It a bit bulky and kind of reminds me of a balaclava helmet from the 1970s. It’ll probably look fine on a commuting bike but on your best road bike…….. but having said that, show me a waterproof smartphone case that is stylish.
In conclusion, On the plus side the Manta works brilliantly. Its quick and easy to install and it will withstand anything the weather can throw at it. You may get a few odd looks from your particularly style conscious chums but you’ll probably have the last laugh when the heavens open and their designer phone is completely knackered but your’s still works.
