Smartphone Video Natural Lighting

Five great tips on how to make great videos from home by just using the FREE natural light of the sun, and you get to save time and lots of money because you won’t have to get all that lighting kit stuff and spend the time to mess with it!

These tips are a nice compliment to my recently released FREE EBOOK.

A common challenge with people getting setup at home to shoot a video for YouTube is whether or not they need to rush out and buy a DSLR camera and spend additional money on lights or a lighting kit to make a fancy studio setup. Well, let me tell you, you don’t have to any of that to get going.

You can get started with just the video camera already in your smartphone and take advantage of the Natural Light that’s out there, and it’s FREE to use! The tips included here will benefit DSLR users as well.

Tip 1: Know the environment and how to work with it

- Know what variables affect light and quality of light coming in windows
- North, South, East and West exposure all affect lighting differently
- Color of light changes – sunrise, sunset, time of day.
- If the location is the overriding factor and you can’t accommodate the time of day for good natural lighting, then you may have to purchase additional lights so that you can light the location whenever you desire.
- You may also choose to add a complimentary light for the fill and a back lighting. This may be a budget decision.

Tip 2: Properly position the subject in relation to the window light

- Front lit by the window
- Sidelight with the window
- Backlit by the window

Tip 3: Know when to shoot to get the results you desire

- When is the optimal time to shoot video indoors using natural light?
- Sun, cloud, mix of sun and cloud, blue skies – what is the difference to indoor light?

Tip 4: Use a deflector / diffuser to help adjust the lighting effect

- A diffuser softens the window light and broadens it out.
- A lighting reflector can be used to balance the contrast. Place the reflector to act as a fill light whereby it bounces natural light back onto the subject.

Tip 5: Tune your camera setup

- Exposure control – auto and manual.
- ISO, f-stop (aperture) and shutter speed
- Given that, if you are using a DSLR, you will be shooting at a shutter speed of 1/50th or 1/60th depending on the fps rate of 24 or 30 – based on the 2x (fps) rule.
- Choosing a wide aperture (low f-stop number) will provide a shallow depth of field and blur out the background (particularly useful if there is some clutter around the house).
- Choosing a larger ISO provides more light; particularly useful if there isn’t much natural light coming indoors.
- Most of the newer DSLRs have a large range of ISO and handle high ISOs really well. A lower ISO (e.g. 200) means a less grainy picture and better color and grain. Plus there are tools to help reduce noise in the image during post-processing if you want a less grainy look.
- Again, for a smartphone, in reasonable lighting conditions, the auto settings should serve you well. Just be sure that you can use thing like auto-exposure lock so that the exposure doesn’t get ruined as you move the camera around.
