I want to talk about Mobile Photography - specifically ways to steady you phone for longer exposures - more and more of these smartphones are excellent cameras and offer the ability to shoot longer shutters and excellent video - so not only might you want to attach one to a tripod, a gimbal or slide it into something that allows you to further extend the capabilities of the phone
I have three different options here and it is easy choice if you just want something that nicely allows you to stabilize the phone-
The Mefoto Sidekick360 plus is my choice. We included this in our gift guides - I will link that below if you want to watch more but the quick highlights - it’s very well made, the bottom is actually an arca swiss compatible plate, making it easy to attach to one of the most popular tripod standards or use the tripod screw, it offers great degree of flexibility, you can crank it down to really hold your phone AND it is lightweight and doesn’t block access to any part of the screen. This is the plus model made only for larger phones. They sell a version for smaller phones. The one downside I could foresee - buy this and later you downsize your phone, you would then need to buy the smaller version or vice versa.
Buy The RetiCam Xl and you are all set for phones from 2.75 inches to 3.6inches - so no worries about phone size changes This is also well made, much simpler in constructions - basically it is just a large gripper - you need to provide a tripod head to add any angle or rotation My biggest annoyance with the Retic Cam - it overlaps the screen a small amount and when I am shooting with the LG G4 or LG v10 it does block access to the buttons I need. That’s a total deal breaker for me but if you have an app with buttons elsewhere or you have a phone with a giant bezel you will be just fine.
There is a cheaper option that use a spring tension - this is actually what was provided with the gimbal I recently reviewed- I don’t love Getting the phone in or out - mostly out - I feel like I am about to get my fingers pinched as it slams back down - but then again I am a sissy. I also feel like the lifespan of this is going to be significantly shorter than the other two- it doesn't feel particularly well made and all plastic but it has held my phone securely and that is the most important feature.
Cinema Mount - This is the other category of smartphone holders and one that will give you ways to mount accessories like better mics, lights or attach a filter to the front of your lens. And it also provides a tripod slot, though I am annoyed how off center this one is. This one also uses a tension spring to hold your phone and it is adjustable to match up with your camera/phone. It came with additional lenses attached that I found to be just OK - fun to use but I was annoyed that if I wanted to use this I was always shooting through extra glass - so I removed the lenses but can screw them back on if desired. One big benefit of something like this is the ability to attach filters. Again - I wanted to do that without their lenses so I ended up with something like this and I would probably be better off with one of these little smart clips instead. And if you like the Cinema mount but wish you had more hot shoes - consider something like iographers device. I believe it is Apple only but does provide two hot shoes and tripod mounts on the bottom and side. There are a few additional companies coming to market with similar devices that cover a wider range of phones.
That’s a quick look at several options for increasing your mobile photography tools.
