Benro X 3XS Lite 3 Axis Smartphone Gimbal Full Review With Sample Footage.
Good: The gimbal is foldable so it’s packs down nice and small making it really easy to carry with you no matter where you go. It will easily fit in a camera bag, backpack or even your pockets.
Good: I really love the app for this gimbal. It was a breeze to get setup and it’s packed with features like photo and video modes, face tracking object tracking, slow motion and my personal favorite the motion time lapse mode.
There are a couple of hiccups with the app one being the app’s frame rates don’t mirror the iPhones frame rates. With the Benro app you can only record video in 30fps and 60fps there is no 24p or 25p for my Euro friends. Benro is aware of the issue and is already working on getting it fixed. Also when you use the zoom toggle on the gimbal the image on the screen stutters. The stuttering isn't recorded but you do see it on your screen when filming.
Good: For the most part the hardware feels really good. The handle fits nicely in my hand. The button placement is nice and easy to access there is a zoom toggle, a joystick, record button, custom button, and even a 3.5mm microphone input. Unfortunately, you can’t use traditional microphones you can only use TRRS microphones these are mics designed to work exclusively with mobile phones. This is a real bummer for me because I thought one of the advantages of having a mic input on the gimbal would be the ability to connect traditional microphones without the need to connect an adapter to the phone but no you still need the lightning to 3.5mm audio adapter for iPhone which is a real disappointment.
Also on the downside I do not like the phone clip of this gimbal. It doesn't wrap around my phone to make me feel like it's seated securely. If you are someone that uses a thick phone case you can forget about using it with this gimbal you are going to have to remove your case to make your phone fit. You can use your phone with a case but it's going to need to be a thinner case come of the cases like the OtterBox cases won't fit. However, thinner cases like the SandMarc lens cases mount cases will work.
Finally the most important feature is the stabilization and the Benro 3XS Lite balances even the largest phones and provides extremely stable footage. When using this gimbal you can expect buttery smooth footage when you are walking, running, driving or riding if you mount this to a bike. Also because at the bottom of the handle there is a 1/4 - 20 tripod thread you have incredible mounting potential.
All in all this is a really nice gimbal filled with features you normally only find on higher end and more expense gimbals and with the 3XS Lite priced below $100 this is a great option for anyone looking for a smartphone gimbal. However, with DJI and others having also recently released foldable and compact smartphone gimbals for only a few dollars more I think Benro might need to lower their price to attract potential buyers away from their biggest competitors.
